Gobi My first 100km

I arrived early and organised my box at the Welsh table, met the assistant Scotland manager and got ready to race. I got talking to John Pares(Welsh No.1) and we discussed the 8hr tactic. We went off together and the first 3 laps went past with no incident although we soon discovered that we were on a different pace plan to everyone else who either ran faster and dropped us or slower. After another few laps we were joined by Charlie Noble(former Scottish international V50 and still a 36 min 10km runner). I could not understand him so for the first time I ran on alone after another lap Charlie charged past me and John and I ran on together. Rach was dealing with my drinks and food intake as the Mel(Welsh manager) dealt with John. Just before halfway I was passed by the leaders lead by Matt Lynas who was dropping out at halfway(running sub 7hr pace) I hit half way in 3.50.11 having left John on over a lap or so back when he had to put his T-shirt on. Not long after half way I unlapped myself from Andy(Barry winner) who was struggling from the early pace. I caught Charlie after a few laps but was myself caught by Adela(ladies winner). For the next few laps we chatted/swapped places until the great Potato incident around lap17. Lucky for me Rach ignored my don't bother and found some potatoes. This one moment probably stopped my pace from dropping anymore. From 18 onwards I had a walk run system working and my laps controlled to 22 mins and I was joined by Heather before injury forced her to drop out. After the potatoes kicked in the only thing holding me back was my hamstrings which as normal cramped if I pushed too much(more gym work required but they are getting stronger). With about 3 laps to go I was in good spirits and Rach informed me I was catching Colin Gell in 7th(Gobsmacked). I set off in pursuit(kept same pace) and caught him quickly which inspired me more and I actually picked my pace up. As I came in to start my last lap Mel said Colin was catching me again I turned round and he was joking but either way I legged it and ran my fastest lap since 16(20.36). I was given the Welsh flag and sprinted to the line.

So much is missed here as when running you see it and miss it all. I got to see Jez Bragg looking smooth Colin Deasy dropping out and people battling with inner demons which we all do while ultra running. Maybe in time I will do an even more detailed report. I know at one point I was passed by the Irish no.1 and Brian Cole of England and that I joined them for most of a lap but I have no idea when.

At the end of the day I did not make 8hrs but I hit my secondary target, I am concerned at how my pace dropped off and I should mention the wind and the changing weather which was very strange. You got hot and cold in the same lap. I have sun burn. Cannock & Stafford AC 8:01:33 8:16:58 8:20:01 71.84
